G-Girls Go Healthy

Well, just a few more days of first week’s challenge- to only have 1 fried food item for the week.  I had mine last night (Superboy’s french fries- yum!) so the rest of the weekend I’ll have to make sure I don’t have any other deep fried foods.

Starting on Monday, March 29 we will begin the  new weekly challenge.  Just wanted to give people a few days notice if anyone else is following along with us.  Week 2 will be all about drinking more water.  I’m going to ensure that I drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day.  After researching this a bit- I discovered that Canada’s Food Guide recommends that water be drunk to quench thirst but a recommendation isn’t made about how much water you should drink per day.  That’s because there is a large range of how much water each individual needs.  If you work out a lot you’ll need more than 8 glasses per day, your weight determines how much water you need, etc.  It does seem to be the case, though, that everyone should be drinking at least 8 glasses per day.

So- this challenge will be to drink a minimum of 8 glasses of water per day- certainly adjust this number as necessary for yourself.  If you don’t like the taste of water- add lemon or lime slices- or even a handful of frozen berries.

{March 24, 2010}   Week 1 Tip, Revised

This week, we’ll be limiting the amount of deep-fried foods we eat to 1 serving a week. A deep-fried food item is anything that is put in a basket and lowered into a vat of boiling grease and/or fat to cook for several minutes. It also includes foods that cook in their own grease and /or fat, such as bacon, other pork-related products, and some fast-food hamburgers (grilled is OK, but barely).

{March 23, 2010}   Fried food question

Does a stir fry cooked in a wok with oil count as fried food?  Just askin’…..

{March 23, 2010}   What is a g-girl?

I’ll let Barb explain that one- but let’s say when we were Masters students years ago being a G-girl involved eating copious amounts of pizza and bacon cheesy fries (often on the same night) and chocolate and chips before noon on a Sunday (okay- we were hungover!).

{March 23, 2010}   Week 1

Welcome to our blog- thanks Barb for setting it up!  I know that I have to make some lifestyle changes- but it just seems so intimidating to make those changes all at once.  So- Barb asked me if we could come up with a ‘healthy living’ idea each week and slowly make permanent lifestyle changes.  The changes can be about healthy eating, exercise, relaxation- anything that contributes to living a healthier life.  No fad dieting or anything like that- just sound, healthy practices.  Basically, every week starting on a Monday we’re going to choose 1 ‘healthy’ thing to do- and as Barb mentioned- this week it’s to only have 1 fried food for the week.

{March 23, 2010}   Fried Foods Scare

Barbara was granted a free pass, and the taco strips from last night’s salad don’t count. Booyah! Theresa had a scare, but as it turns out, Subway microwaves their bacon, they don’t fry it. So her supper from last night also doesn’t count.

Today’s motto needs to be: always check how restaurants prepare their food! If you feel a little shy about it, just claim that it’s because of your food allergies. Most restaurants go out of their way accommodate food allergies.

{March 22, 2010}   Week 1

Our first tip is to limit fried foods to one meal item a week. This includes, but is not limited to: french fries, potato chips, cheetos (sob!), corn chips, nachos, yam fries (double sob!), and doughnuts. When eating out, ask how certain meats are prepared. Lots of restaurants deep fry their chicken fingers, wings, and sometimes even sausages and bacon. Even if you’re a vegetarian, it’s still safer to just ask.

Unfortunately, one of us has already had her weekly allotment without realizing it. Turns out the crunchy bits in the salad her husband made were actually taco strips. D’oh
